Description

Skiing Holiday - Obergurgl / Hochgurgl, Austria with Neilson.  Obergurgl and Hochgurgl share one of the highest ski areas in Austria. Set in the spectacular Oetz Valley, the slopes reach over 3000m, resulting in reliable snow conditions from as early as November to as late in the season as May. Both areas, linked by a gondola and bus service, have developed from farming settlements into quality resorts offering convenient, high altitude skiing.

Obergurgl’s resort centre has little traffic and numerous shops, cafés, restaurants and bars, many of which have a great atmosphere at the end of the day. Obergurgl does not promise to be one of Austria’s liveliest resorts though live music is not unusual in some of the bars later on in the evenings. Hochgurgl is no more than a cluster of quality hotels set on the mountainside offering superb convenience for the slopes and a relaxing mountain base. These resorts attract a loyal following of beginners, intermediates and families every winter thanks to snowsure slopes, great quality accommodation and a relaxed resort atmosphere.

Beginners
Obergurgl and Hochgurgl have nursery slopes for complete novices and ski schools with a great reputation, making them both a good option for beginners. After the first few days, beginners can use the Gaisberg chair and ski the gentle runs back to the village to gain confidence. There are plenty of easy blue runs to progress onto and the quality of the snow here makes learning a lot easier.

Intermediates
There is some perfect intermediate terrain in Obergurgl, made even better by the normally excellent snow conditions. Hochgurgl, connected by a high speed gondola has the bigger area of cruising runs and for something more challenging, head to Vorderer Wurmkogllift. For more variety you could catch the bus to the ski area of Sölden, but unfortunately there is no lift pass sharing arrangement.

Advanced
There is not much on piste to challenge advanced skiers but the Hohe Mut can offer testing moguls and there is a fair amount of enjoyable off-piste to be found with a guide. This is a well known area for ski touring with challenging expeditions to
the glaciers at the head of the valley.

Snowboarding
Although traditionally a ski destination, Obergurgl & Hochgurgl are good for boarders. There is a terrain park and a quarter-pipe on the Festkogl. Beginners will be happy they can cover much of the resort without having to use drag lifts, and there’s great off-piste potential for the more advanced riders.

About Neilson
We've been around for around 25 years. We started as two separate companies, one providing top-end ski holidays and the other taking people sailing in Greece.  For around two decades we became better and better at putting together holidays, one company doing fun things in the snow, the other having adventures in the Med.  Then, in 1999, Thomas Cook, who owned both companies, decided that it would make sense for us to join together. That was when the famous orange logo appeared, and Neilson as we know it came into existence.
